[REVIEW] 7 Days to Die

Gameplay ๐ŸŽฎ

The game follows the core principles of Minecraft, but adds its own twists and a strong Zombie Survival identity. Despite the familiar foundation, it manages to feel fresh thanks to its aggressive pacing and constant tension. As a pure Survival experience, this is easily one of the best purchases Iโ€™ve made โ€” brutal, rewarding, and consistently engaging. (Survival Horror titles like Resident Evil belong to a completely different category.) A fun, vicious, and highly addictive gameplay loop.

Originality ๐ŸŽจ

The game clearly draws inspiration from several wellโ€‘known classics, blending familiar survival-shooter elements with a fast-paced, wave-based structure reminiscent of PUBG and CoD Zombies. Even though these influences are noticeable, the execution is cohesive enough to give the game its own identity. It doesnโ€™t reinvent the genre, but it delivers a solid and enjoyable take on it โ€” fresh enough to stand out, yet not groundbreaking enough for a perfect score.

Technical Quality ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ

The game has come a long way over the years, and that evolution is clearly visible. While the performance still struggles at times โ€” especially during heavier moments โ€” the overall technical package is far better than it used to be. I still remember the early days: rough visuals, inconsistent lighting, and textures that looked even worse if, like me, you usually play on Lowโ€“Medium settings. Today, the game is genuinely pleasant to look at, offering cleaner models, improved effects, and some surprisingly beautiful scenery. Itโ€™s not the most visually impressive title out there, but it delivers a solid and enjoyable presentation that fits the experience well. My experience comes from a PC only playthrough. Heard that console versions have even more inconsistencies, even more bugs.

System Design ๐Ÿ—๏ธ

The game offers a solid foundation of mechanics that make the experience consistently fun and engaging. Its AI behaviour and defensive systems are chaotic in a good way, creating unpredictable moments that keep you alert. Early progression can feel rough due to limited resources, but once you understand the enemy patterns and how the systems interact, the difficulty curve becomes far more manageable. From there, building and optimizing defenses turns into a playful challenge โ€” sometimes even goofy โ€” as you create unconventional base entrances designed purely to shred zombies.

After almost a decade playing, Iโ€™ve seen updates that didnโ€™t resonate with me. And I get it: the community wants everything, the developers want to innovate their own way, and not everyone likes the same direction. Itโ€™s a very personal topic for each player. In my case, the experience is still positive overall, but some changes felt disruptive simply because I was used to playing in a certain style and suddenly had to adapt. One update even became a meme โ€” the infamous glass bottles situation โ€” a perfect example of how small design decisions can split opinions.
